My E1705 (almost the same laptop, only difference is the GPU and case)
is working great with kernel 2.6.16 and alsa 1.0.11.

If I do have to install new modules to get the input functions,
how can I do this?

Probably you need to update to a newer kernel.

Or just the latest alsa. 1.06 is pretty old and the intel hda chip had a
lot of trouble in earlier versions of alsa as I recall. Download the latest alsa and compile and install that (you need to make
sure that you have installed the kernel-source rpm as well)
