Yes, so you do want the mic input upmixed. Unless your hardware supports it directly, you must use JACK or arecord | aplay as I described previously. You have to disable "Capture feedback" for this to sound good, otherwise you'll hear the direct signal from the mic mixed with the (delayed) upmixed mic input.
