By booting 2.6.15.

Your problem is that this type of workaround is wrong when there
are speakers which it makes sense to control independently.

How exactly did the controls in the old kernel work, the Master controls
affected the internal speakers and the Headphone controls the HP port?

Try toggling this switch.
