There is an article about card ordering in the (I think) unofficial ALSA FAQ that refers to card ordering: http://alsa2.opensrc.org/FAQ#The_order_of_my_cards_changes_whenever_I_reboot_or_as_devices_are_plugged_and_unplugged._How_can_I_create_PCMs_that_refer_to_cards_by_name_instead_of_number.3F Once you got the ordering sorted out, you can use asound.conf in order to specify the default device or tell your applications which sound card they are supposed to use. There is also an entry about hotplugging USB devices that sould apply to pcmcia cards as well. http://alsa2.opensrc.org/Hotplugging_USB_audio_devices_(Howto) n.b.
