You make it sound like this is trivial functionality - it's not! Lots
of work by alsa-lib is required to transparently upmix stereo to 5.1
while handling multiple streams and coexisting with actual 5.1 streams.
This is beginning to sound like a wish list, so I though I would add in my wishes.

From the mixed upmixed stereo and native 5.1, I want AC3 encoding and spdif passthrough. This probably means decoding any native AC3 before dmix and then re-encode. This is probably not fantastic for sound quality so if there is nothing to mix in to the AC3 then perhaps short circuit the re-encoding, or a configurable way to say if there is an AC3 source then play that only, otherwise mix all other sources.

When nothing is playing I need AC3 silence, otherwise it takes a few seconds for my amp to lock on to and start playing from spdif.

I know it is possible to hook up to jack plugins to do some of this but it is far from the reach of most (any?) users. Even though I got some of this working, mythtv would not work with it :-(

One last thing, make the default oss emulation use dmix.

Just because Windows does it does not mean it's easy!
Windows does not do this either, but since when was windows a good benchmark?

John.
