I have some problems already posted by others but the conclusions don't work for me. On an ASUS K8V-MX board, I tried both the onboard via8237 and the SB Live 5.1 PCI card with the Teufel Concept E 5.1 sound system and linux 2.6.16.3 (both static and modular drivers). With via82xx I get this boot message:
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.10rc3 (Mon Nov 07 13:30:21 2005 UTC). ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:11.5[C] -> GSI 22 (level, low) -> IRQ 23 PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:11.5 to 64 codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000] codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000] codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000] codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000] ALSA device list: #0: VIA 8237 with AD1888 at 0xa400, irq 23 With emu10k1, there are no error messages. The problem I have is that I want to listen to 5.1 surround sound but only the center (not even the front) gets sound by default. I switched around in alsamixer but found only one working solution: setting "spread" to "on" and "surround" to "shared". The resulting sound is, say, weak or bleach. The above doesn't work for the SB live because there are no such options in alsamixer. I could not get 5.1 out the card at all. I also tried: speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6, which plays *noise* through only the front speakers (not the center) no matter what configuration I choose in alsamixer for both of the drivers. I tried sample 5.1 files with xine and mpg321, as found on the net, but nothing changes the quality. Also: If I don't "spread" the sound, there is no bass at all. With via82xx, I turned off dxs and played with AC97_quirks but that did not help anyways. With via82xx I can hear click sounds from the center and a deep tone from the left front. With emu10k1 I get really ugly quality sound and, for whatever reasons, turning on "headphones" in alsamixer freezed the card that much that I had to plug it off the board. What If I buyed a digital receiver. Would alsa send dolby digital over spdif by default with via82xx or must I expect new problems?
