Thanks. Worked first time.

Now that I look, I find updated Multiple Sound Card
docs in the Wiki, and some helpful explanations about the 
various ALSA configuration options in the kernel docs
./Documentation/sound/alsa/. 

But the changes in modutils--/etc/modprobe.d and not needing
update-modules--I never would have guessed. That was one
part of the process I was absolutely certain I was informed
about!
