The UA-5 has hardware mixer controls that are not accessible by
software.

The five controls "Sens L/R", "Hi-Z", "Phantom 48V" and "Input Volume"
must all be set correctly for your mics.

Many firewire devices will be supported by the FreeBob project.  There
is a chance that the UA-1000 may be supported in the future.
