Well i've finally managed to get mplayer to provide AC3 pass through using the following options in the ~/.mplayer/config file. ao=alsa:device=digital ac=hwac3, Just need to see some fixes for the AD9186a chipset so that I don't need the hacks to disable analog surround support.
