Indeed. But it's more than that. Even if I generate output on the other channels (i.e. with mplayer's channel mapping), the amp still only sees 2.0 channels. To my knowledge that is because sp/dif bandwidth is too low for more that 2 channels unless they are compressed into an AC3 stream first. So the only way to actually _get_ all the channels my hardware can generate to my amp seems to be encoding the whole bunch into an AC3 stream in real time.
