Unfortunately for this theory, I have a counterexample. I have an Intel HDA

It seems to work OK.
I have not tested it that much, but definitely can play sounds using aplay.
The exception that proofs the theory :) I did, during my search, come across
working examples. I however noticed that most of them were desktops, not
notebooks. Guess notebook technology differs from desktop tech. in more ways
than mere size. My concern is my FS Amilo Pro 2040 and after last nights
posting my search for a solution intensified. And guess what I came across...

This guy has a FS Amilo Pro 2040 like me and claims the patch works. Will try
it out later tonight. Interestingly enough he pinpointed the problem and it
looks like I deserve a cigar for my analysis.
If you give yourself a cigar, perhaps you should send him a case of them.
It certainly would not surprise me if the surround sound capabilities of
notebooks were crippled.
