Hello Lee,

thanks for the quick reply.

The nature of the problem is, in a nutshell, i don't hear any sound (although
the connected cd-player gives output). I verified that my hardware setup works
using another OS, where things worked flawlessly. So I suppose I should hear
sound.

I played around with alsa-mixer. Interesting options where
- IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA Capture (which is set to maximum)
- IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA (which is set to maximum)
- ICE958 (which is set to PCM)

Is there any other option in alsa-mixer that i should take a look at?

And some information, that alsa is willing to provide on my sound-system:
schenk > cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [V8237 ]: VIA8237 - VIA 8237
                     VIA 8237 with ALC658D at 0xd800, irq 17
schenk > cat /proc/asound/devices
 17: [0- 1]: digital audio playback
 25: [0- 1]: digital audio capture
 16: [0- 0]: digital audio playback
 24: [0- 0]: digital audio capture
  0: [0- 0]: ctl
 33: : timer

Hopefully these informations were helpful to go ahead?!

Best regards,
Franz
