Dear Alsa users,

I've somehow hosed my system so that anything I record using arecord,
rec, or other programs produces all zeros (flat silence). I've tried
setting capture to both line and microphone inputs, with the same
results. This is all the more galling because I can clearly hear a
signal in my headphones coming out of my laptop. (I'm using Debian
with a 2.4.x kernel on an IBM THinkpad 570. Recording has worked on
the machine in past, but undoubtedly some update has caused a
problem.)

I had hoped I might be able to diagnose the problem by using /proc/asound,
but I can't really find documentation for the things that are there.
For example, there is
  /proc/asound/CS46xx/dsp
which is loaded with intriguing files, but no documentation.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions, pointers, etc. I'd be thrilled
if it turns out to be a stupid mixer setting on my part. But it seems
unlikely given that I can hear the signal in my headphones :-(

Oh yes, and *playing* sound works just fine---aplay, xplay, xmms, and
friends all work.

Norman
