I noticed that when I let arts use the route-device and xmms plays directly on 
alsa, too, arts will sometimes freeze my system for a few seconds. So now I'm 
back to letting arts use the default device (front speakers only) and xmms 
the stereo-to-5.1-device. It seems to work.
