All I did was to change "pcm out" to "pre 3D" from "post 3D".
I still wonder how come the only fader that works is the master volume...

What codec do you have? (see /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/ac97#0-0)
What are the contents of /etc/asound.state after running "alsactrl store"?
