Ingo & Clemens mentioned that I needed kernel headers so I tried 'apt-install kernel-headers-2.4.18-bf2.4' - apparently successfully.
I did not compile the current kernel but installed it from CD-ROM from
a pre-release version some time ago and it may have undergone some 'dist-upgrades'.
I apt-installed 'alsa-modules-2.4.25-1-386' - which may be the problem. It was the nearest
version number at debian.org
/var/log/boot tells me
Sun Dec 21 17:18:07 2003: Starting ALSA (unknown version): failed - ALSA modules not installed
( 2003 ? I saw it today)
/usr is 100% full and after a number of application deletions this has not changed.
I created
Tux:/usr/src/linux/include/linux# ls config.h version.h
and found
Tux:/usr/src/modules/alsa-driver# make
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/acore'
