Output from /var/log/everything/current which seems related to the
Midisport:
Apr 7 14:04:10 [kernel] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using address 3
Apr 7 14:04:10 [/etc/hotplug/usb/midisport_fw] load
/usr/share/usb/midisport/MidiSport2x2.ihx for 763/1001/1 to
/proc/bus/usb/003/003
Apr 7 14:04:12 [kernel] usb 3-2: USB disconnect, address 3

These messages are OK so far, but after the "disconnect" there should be other messages for a new device at the next address.

The problem looks like its kernel related. I found out that if I unplugged my USB mouse, it wouldn't be detected when I plugged it back in. Upgrading from 2.6.4-mm2 to 2.6.5-mm1 fixed it. Coldplugging still didn't seem to work though, I had to hotplug the Midisport for it to work.

Your README refers to /var/log/messages, but it doesn't appear on
my system (Gentoo).

Each distribution uses other files for this ...

That's what I thought, but /var/log/messages was mentioned in a discussion about the Midisport on the Gentoo forums, got me wondering if it was output specific to hotplug or whatever.
