Problem is, when using envy24control, we see sound as it plays through an audio player on the output bars, but don't hear anything. Like I said, im no audio guy, but if the envy24control application shows activity when audio is played, this means the audio IS indeed making it to the cards output ports, no?
In the routing tab of envy24control, set HW outputs or S/PDIF output (whichever you use) to Digital Mixer or PCM outs. Try also changing them back (envy24control doesn't detect current card state and always shows PCM out being selected on startup (even if the card is set to use something else). If you select PCM out, the digital mixer controls should have no effect on sound output.
The leftmost big VU meters display digital mixer output - thus the sound you'll get out of the card if Digital Mixer is selected as output (and the analog DAC volumes are up).
Note: ALSA-OSS cheats somehow and manages to skip the digital mixer, behaving oddly. I still haven't quite figured out how it works.
Other thing to note, if using S/PDIF, is that the sound will always change (a bit) if you route it thru digital mixer. Oddly enough, even if you don't use the mixer, ALSA output will get changed somehow (the S/PDIF output isn't exactly same as input PCM), but ALSA-OSS will give out exactly same bits.
