I'm new to the list, although not new to alsa. I've been using alsa on my linux box at work since version 0.9.6 and I'm very pleased with it. However, I'm having no luck getting alsa to work on my box at home. The difference? At work I use snd-cs4236 and at home I'm using snd-intel8x0. Let me say first that I'm fairly sure I've done everything that needs to be done. I've installed alsa-driver, alsa-lib, alsa-utils and alsa-firmware from source, and the builds went without a hitch. I've modified my modules.conf as the web page for snd-intel8x0 describes. I've got my devices created with the snddevices script and all of my users are in the audio group. I use alsamixer to unmute all channels and volume is set to maximum.
Everything loads to perfection, but I get no sound whatsoever in either the console or in GNOME.
I've tried every version I can get my hands on from 0.9.6 to 1.0.4, and I've also tried kernel 2.6.x. Makes no difference at all; no errors but no sound either.
And just to make things more interesting, OSS works just fine.
I've searched the list archives and I get multiple hits on the intel8x0 driver but no clear cut solutions.
Can anyone give me a pointer?
