So, here's what I've done so far.

After much frustration and tinkering, I deleted my .xine, and .asoundrc,
enabled 5 channel in xine, and plugged my rear speakers into the
microphone jack, and now, everything works!

So, a few questions:

1) Can I switch things so that i can have my rear speakers plugged into
the rear speaker port? Bascially, can i tell ALSA where the correct
channels should be played to?

2) How can I make xmms play full surround? I can't find any option that
lets me play anything except front and sub (no center or surround).
I've tried configure on the alsa plugin, trying different hw devices
(all but default make xmms freeze). Actually, what I'm noticing now as
well is that xine doesn't even play my cd's in surround, i just get
front speakers (no center/surround). Do CD's just not play on all 5
spkrs without some fidddling... i thought i remember seeing something in
the alsa-docs about this, so I'll go look...
