Hi everyone,

I'm planning to get either a Delta 1010 or an RME HDSP (PCI) + Multiface.
I understand the capabilities of these cards, and both will work for me.
I have a slight preference for the RME.

My question is about driver stability. It seems that the ice1712 driver
is very stable, and it's unlikely that I'd have problems getting a Delta
1010 to work.

I'm not so sure about the HDSP. There are many posts in the archives for
this list (and for others) about problems. Surely many of those have been
fixed, and I'm not concerned about the trouble some have had with the
Cardbus, as this seems to be a matter of the pcmcia drivers, not ALSA.
But it would still be nice to hear some positive comments.

Can anyone reassure me about the HDSP PCI + Multiface with ALSA? I would
be getting a new one, and it would be helpful if someone with a recent rev
of this hardware could say that it's basically trouble-free. I'm not
bothered by patching my kernel, compiling ALSA from CVS, etc. I'm just
concerned with driver stability under considerable CPU load.

The card will be used mainly for multi-channel output, and never for
multi-channel hard disk recording. I would like to have one or two
low-latency inputs for effects processing, though that is not the main
purpose for the card. Also, it'd be nice if the MIDI I/O works well,
without causing dropouts in audio.

Finally, I don't have a mixer of the right size for distributing the
outputs to speakers the way I want them. So I'm considering going
to speakers directly from the Multiface, and using hdspmixer to set
volume levels and an aux send to a sub. ("Set it and leave it" is fine.)
Is that a stupid idea? I mean, is the driver going to go haywire and
leave me with bleeding ears before I can turn off the speakers? If I
get a Delta 1010, I'll have to get another mixer also.

Thanks very much for any opinions people have.
