[Alsa-user] Card not detected in /proc/asound/cards why?

I have the ALSA module loaded into my kernel and it appears to be loaded 
properly as it is listed in a lsmod yet when I look at cat 
/proc/asound/cards I see: --- no soundcards --- How do I remedy this 
problem? The module is loaded fine with no complaints so I really don't 
have any ideas. Due to this alsamixer only gives me 'alsamixer: function 
snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device'

Card: Via Envy 24PT onboard sound chipset (on Chaintech ZNFS-150) using 
snd-ice1724 module.
