Howdy. This may seem obvious but just in case (I couldn't make it out from your hardware listing), are you sure that your USB interface actually has a mixer on it? Not all do. It may be a moot point since it's a doorstop under Linux 2.6.* anyway but the USB Audiophile doesn't have a mixer nor does the Edirol UA-20. So that error may be due to the fact that there is no mixer to control.
