I think you might be on to something here...
I tried changing the Maximum Frequency, as John had suggested, to 44100 Hz, 
and re-tried another recording, this time, I ran audacity from a shell prompt 
(to see if anything shows up "behind the scenes", and this is what I came up 
with, the message below shows up when I "export to WAV")

Pa_SetupDeviceFormat: warning - requested sample rate = 44100 Hz - closest = 
48000

How can I "force" this to work???
