are you sure you have no old OSS modules in the kernel? i do not talk
about OSS emulation but the real thing [tm]... Having OSS modules and
ALSA modules in the kernel at the same time does not work [usually].

You see: If the OSS emu is working, then normal alsa apps should be
working, too..
