Dear list members,

I have an Abit IS7E mobo, with 5.1 onboard audio.
The mobo has Intel ICH5 chipset, Realtek ALC650rev0 AC97 codec according to the alsamixer.
My problem is that the mic input is noisy. I need mic input badly for gnomeeting.

It is NOT noisy under Windows with the same HW setup, so probably the problem is not HW related.

Any help is appreciated, details follow.

Thanks,
Gabor

Details:
------------
Alsaconf detects the card as i8x0. (I use Debian unstable, with kernel .deb package 2.4.22-1-686 with the corresponding alsa-modules .deb package)
If I try, then the debian "discover" utility identifies the ICH5 chipset and tries to load the kernel modules : i810_audio and ac97_codec for the card.
However, being an "alsa-fan" I do not let discover to load them, since it prevents the alsa startup and I did not consider (yet) to "switch back" to kernel OSS sound. (Maybe I should?)

The card works quite ok (though I always used only for 2ch output) except recording from the mic input. Lin-in, aux, PCM, etc. recording works ok, but the MIC input is VERY noisy.

As for "noisy" I mean that the noise is VERY audible during VoIP telephony sessions (well above the VoIP silence detection threshold of the voip codec), causing constant annoyance for the remote party.

The noise a continous low-frequency, pulsating noise, like a heavy machinery (e.g. steam-hammer) behind a brick-wall. The effect is very bad if I enable the +20dB input gain. It is tolerable without the gain, but then the voice input level is to low....

IMPORTANT: The noise does not happen during Win2k session, using the "factory drivers" from Abit. (Of course I hear some static noise and some of the usual the 50Hz AC noise, but it is almost noise-free for being a mobo-soundcard.

The noise is neither Gnomemeeting related:
I can hear the noise either via the playback mixer (i.e., pulling up the mic mixer) or from sound recordings made by designating MIC as the CAPTURE input.

If I physically disconnect the mic even without changing the mixer leveles, the noise disappears. Muting the mic input also switch off the noise.
