Good. It's best to start simple.

Okay, then there is a problem with dmix. It *could* be that the ALSA
modules in kernel 2.6.2 are too old. I don't know which version is in
2.6.2, but I remember, that with 2.6.0 they were really old. But maybe
you can built the module from 1.0.2 or current CVS?
