Ha! cracked it. For anyone else that needs to know, it's because the OSS
emulation still thinks the second device is number 1 (default
MODULE_PARM adsp_map is 1). That means you need an adsp_map=2 as an
option on the snd-pcm-oss module.

OK, maybe I didn't get an answer here because it's obvious to everybody
else :-). I did dig the solution out of somebody else's post, but it was
a devil of a job to uncover it.

So, on an NFORCE2/ALC650, I now have SPDIF working for Alsa and OSS
applications.
