great news.

Since you got it figured out, can you post your /etc/asound.state file.
If you don't have one, to create it, please, execute:

        % alsactl store

BTW, it would be really helpful if everyone who has responded to John's
initial request with positive responses posted their *working* 
/etc/asound.state files as well.

The general comment I here is "play with various alsamixer settings until
you get it working" is just a waste of time. There must be something 
in common that everyone is doing to get MIC recording without hissing
and humming and other disturbances.
