Ever since installing Mandrake 9.1, I've lost use of my soundcard. The sound PCI board is a Creative Labs SB Live! using the EMU10k1 driver.
I'm trying to troubleshoot something that I don't know much about here. This is as far as I've got: I don't know much about the difference between the ALSA sound system and the OSS sound system. I've tried running XMMS (OSS). It is happy playing an MP3 file if I set the output plugin to the OSS driver (not to "alternate /dev/dsp"). However when XMMS is playing an audio file, there is still NO SOUND from the speakers. When I set the output plugin to "/dev/sound/dsp" or "/dev/dsp" then XMMS complains about the sound device not being available. I've learnt about the lspci util, which I've subsequently installed. Running it shows the soundcard sitting there. However running "aplay -l" shows no soundcard available! [EMAIL PROTECTED] Downloads]# lspci 00:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07) 00:0a.1 Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Live! MIDI/Game Port (rev 07) [EMAIL PROTECTED] raheesom]$ aplay -l aplay: device_list:190: no soundcards found... [EMAIL PROTECTED] raheesom]$ pcimodules aic7xxx ne2k-pci emu10k1-gp snd-emu10k1 emu10k1 audigy usb-uhci uhci The pcimodules command shows a whole 4 sound drivers loaded. I don't know whether all of those are needed. One thing I haven't done is to swap out the sound card, but I suspect that if it's showing up under lspci that it should be working OK. Is that right? This is turning into a nightmare as far as software config is concerned. I'm learning why Linux is not seen as an easy option for multimedia. I'm surprised MDK 9.1 is giving me this problem because it's been brilliant as far as all other desktop issues are concerned! -- Regards Rupert Heesom ================================================================== Looking for world-class toxin free products? ------------------------------------------------------------------ --> personal care, food supplements, general household --> Largest range of products under one roof =================> www.worldclasswellness.org.uk <================ ------> Highlighting <----- www.worldclasswellness.org.uk/furtherinfo.html?tag=drepstein ------> Highlighting <----- ================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Perforce Software.
