I looked through the archives, but didn't see this question, although I'm sure it's a FAQ... I also looked through the various HowTos and other docs, but couldn't find an answer.
Back in the day ESD's big claim to fame was that with it more than one app could write to the audio device and esd would merge and play them...
I was under the impression that ALSA9-aware applications that used the actual ALSA interface could do this as well.... but in my experience this doesn't work. Is this supposed to be true? For example, both xmms and mplayer supposedly have native alsa9 support (provided you tell them to use their alsa9 drivers, respectively), but if one of them is using the sound device the other will block waiting for access to the sound device.
Is this supposed to work? I'm just curious...
