I patched my kernel using: patch -Np1 -i patch_file
Sorry, but adding the -N option didn't change anything. Here's part of the output generated by the command
patch --dry-run -Np1 -i ../alsa-bk-2003-12-05.patch
(after a long chain of success/fail messages, when the patch process stops for the first time):

Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
