the last post i saw of his on the archives of the alsa-dev
list said that he couldn't find a way to figure out if the
bit was being set or not.

seems that i has the capability to do ac3 pass through, but
doesn't set the bits according to the ac3 spec (which some
amps don't look for)

so, it works with some amps and not others. 

i searched the archives of the devel list and have emailed
one guy (just last night - didn't expect to get an answer
yet)
