I've been working steadily at this now for two days and am just about
fed up. Here's the problem refined:

I am running Fedora Core 1 and have just recompiled the 2.6 test 9
kernel to include ALSA. Prior to compiling the kernel I also installed
the alsa utils and the alsa libs. I have an NVIDIA NForce 2 motherboard
and am using the onboard sound (I have the i810 modules for alsa
included too in the kernel)

Firstly under no conditions can I get anything to come out of xmms, and
once I applied the 0.9.2 alsa-xmms plugin I can't even start xmms
anymore....

[EMAIL PROTECTED] alsa-xmms-0.9.12]# xmms
Cannot load alsa library: libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object
file: No such file or directory

Now the weird thing is that if I stick a cd in.... it plays perfectly.
Great sound.

Now back to my rants.... If I try amixer I get the error:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] amixer]# ./amixer
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory

If I try the alsa mixer I get:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or
directory

If I try:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] alsactl]# ./alsactl
alsactl: Specify command...

So I'm assuming that alsactl works at least if nothing else does.

Now if I try those commands you gave me I get this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] alsactl]# /usr/sbin/alsactl -f /etc/asound.state store
/usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1061: No soundcards found...

And if I try:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] alsactl]# /usr/sbin/alsactl restore /usr/sbin/alsactl
restore
/usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1148: Cannot find soundcard
'/usr/sbin/alsactl'...

And the whole time this is going on I'm listening to a CD so I don't
understand how it can't detect I've got a sound card.... GAH! Can
someone please help me figure this one out? Its driving me into a sleep
deprived frenzy.
