Despite the fact the guy is an idiot for his list behaviour, I'm not (a moron maybe but not an idiot) and I couldn't get ALSA working with my Audiophile USB either. From the general traffic on this list I would say a lot of people do not find ALSA a simple way to go. Personally I am on a "wait and see" approach for the 2.6 kernel as things seem somewhat alpha at the moment.
