Very interesting - I get the same result using aplay -D plughw:0 -f S16_BE -t raw -c 2 -r 44100 chopin.raw
on a little-endian raw file. Maybe the endianness of audio data could be swapped for the Audiophile, but I have a vague idea that this is a symptom of a trickier problem.
