You should be able to use "alsactl store" as root to store all settings and then use "alsactl restore" to restore it. This also (re)stores all cards after the first one, if you have more in your system. The alsasound init-script in the alsa-driver/utils directory is supposed to do that automatically if it is installed correctly for your distribution (look under /etc/init.d/ and in your runlevel directories (/etc/rc1.d, /etc/rc2.d/,... on Debian)) for an alsa or alsasound init-script or symbolic links to one. "alsasound start" should not only start ALSA but also restore the mixer settings.
