I noticed when I installed the alsa cs46xx driver that the AC'97 codec
supported various IEC958 options, and so I am now trying to get a S/PDIF
link between my laptop and audio receiver. The IEC958 device is hw:0.2.
When I use that device (or "spdif" or "iec958") in mplayer, the program
opens the correct device and appears to be playing but I do not get hear
anything, which comes to my question:

Is the s/pdif output in my laptop actually wired to anything? I believe
that some cards will use one of the stereo channels on line-out (like the
i810 for example) and I was hoping this was the case with my laptop as
well. There is also a rear speaker device (hw:0.1) which so far as I can
tell is not connected to anything. The laptop has 3 minijack connections:
 line-out, line-in and mic.

I am apparantly the first person to try something as silly as get S/PDIF
from a laptop, as I can find nothing on the internet to help answer this
question.
