As several others have found in the past, the Intel D845BGL motherboard with
integrated Intel810 chipset appears to require that the Headphone channel
volumes be on and unmuted. Also, the PCM channels must be on and unmuted. The
Master and Master M(ono) channels can be muted and do not affect the sound. I
now have KDE sounds working and my LG CD/DVD drive plays CD's where you can
hear the music from the speakers. I also confirmed that the stock
distribution of RH9 does not install the devfs server. So this does not
represent a conflict on RH9 systems.

I have noticed that the KDE sounds do not always mix perfectly with the CD
sound---I hear some popping on the leading edge of the KDE sound.

Also, xmame appears to lock up, if you let it try and use alsa sound. If you
issue the -nosound argument, then it comes up, but, of course, there is no
sound for the game.
