OSS uses diffrent way to control pcm volume as is used ALSA. OSS sets AC97 PCM volume to 0 dB or +12 dB (boost) and volume is controled by DSP code.
ALSA uses AC97 PCM volume. You have range from -34,5 dB to +12 dB. If you want PCM volume from range -34,5 dB to 0 dB (this is without bost) then use range from 0 to 75 in alsamixer or 0 to 24 in amixer.
