Hi

I have a ASUS A7V8X-X motherboard with an onboard SoundMax AD1980
Via8233 AC97 soundcard.

I compiled alsa 0.9.6 with my 2.4.21 kernel and I had no problems.

However when I start the machine I get this rather strange error
messages:

ALSA ../alsa-kernel/pci/via82xx.c:503: codec_valid: codec 0 is not valid
[0x87e5370]

but the sound works. What does this error message mean? I have search
the net, but I find no answers to this.

Second and more importantly. When I listen to music (e.i. using the
flash plugin or playing a wav/ogg file) that is 44.1 MHz I get a high
pitch noice. I mean the sound sounds metallic. I can hear the sound ok,
but the quality get poor due to this noice. However if I resample to
48.0 MHz then the sound is perfect. I am wondering if this is a
limitation of the soundcard or is it the ALSA driver that isn't goot
enough? It is a bit annoying as so many programs use 44.1MhZ by default
and most of them you cannot make to use 48.0MHz.

Thanks in advance for any hints.

Keep up the good work!

Preben Randhol
