IIRC, STAC9750 is only a AC97 codec.  The AC97 codec, in order to play
sound, needs a AC97 host interface, which on most newer machines without a
dedicated sound card, is embedded into the core logic (typically on the
south bridge).  so you need to find out what your core logic chipset is
(Intel, VIA, etc) and install the appropriate driver for the AC97
interface on the south bridge.
