I have been looking for a solution to this problem for a while now - I hope somebody can help.
I have a Mandrake 9.1 (kernel 2.4.21) with a ALS4000 based sound card which works fine from Linux. I also have VMware 2 with W2K, and I can't get the sound to work. I have the same configuration in my office except the sound card is another one, whatever sits on the motherboard of a Dell OptiPlex GX110 - here sound works from VMware (and of course Linux).
So my reasoning is that the problem lies with the ASLA driver for this card - does that sound reasonable? And is there a known solution?
These are the symptoms:
1. Sound is fine in Linux 2. In W2K I can install the 'virtual Soundblaster' card and the system tells me it works 3. When I try to play a sound from the 'Sounds' widget in Control Panel, I get the message 'The device seems to be in use'
- so I assume the Windows driver tries to write something to /etc/dsp via VMware, and VMware can't, either because of permissions (though I tried that out without luck) of because the ALSA driver isn't compatible with VMware/W2K's expectations.
