Hello,

I have installed ALSA from the FreshRPMs. (The kernel 2.4.20-8 version
due to a V4L bug in the latest Red Hat kernel.)

I get a burst of static . . . sometimes. I get it when I jump chapters in
MPlayer (shift-period) using -vo sdl. I also get it when I get a "system
bell" in konsole. I /don't/ get it when I get a system bell at the
console or when I play a wav file with playwave.

I have everything but Main and PCM is set to "0".

/proc/pci claims it is a VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio
Controller (rev 80). Strangly enough, lspci insists that it is a VIA
Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50).

The module is snd-via82xx.

How can I troubleshoot this?

Thanks,

-Peter

PS: If anyone happens to know, why does "-vo oss" work with MPlayer but
"-vo alsa" gives "Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound." I
tried to specifie the device, but got lost in a sea of Cs and Ds and 1s
and 3s (and 'p's and 'c's. Geez.)
