I just picked up a Compaq Presario 4402 (from 1996) with an ES1888 on the motherboard. I have found no free driver that works with it so far. However, my tests have been going really slowly. I've tried the OSS sb, the ALSA es18xx, and the FreeBSD 5.1-release sbc.
Details: The OSS sb driver recognizes the chip, loads, and configures it. It plays samples for a while, and then it dies, freezing the application that has it open at the time. Subsequent attempts to open it cause IRQ/DRQ errors. Rebooting is the only apparent fix. The ALSA driver recognizes the chip when I send the module the usual parameters: The resources it's taking, and isapnp=0. It doesn't work with PNP. Then, when it plays a file using OSS emulation, it plays the first 1/4 second or so, and then repeats that again and again until the TERM signal gets through. Subsequent plays get IRQ timeout errors, if I remember correctly. Unloading the ALSA driver and loading the OSS driver afterwards and then playing causes IRQ/DRQ errors without any playing. I haven't tried using a native ALSA player. I've tried several ALSA versions. I tried the latest 0.5.x driver and the latest 0.9.x (as of a few weeks ago). I tried versions that were mentioned in Wikis as working for certain individuals with HP OmniBooks. All that rebooting gets really tedious. Then I added some RAM, and the (Compaq) BIOS wiped out my Linux installation, so I replaced it with FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE. That doesn't now seem like a good idea. Anyway, the FreeBSD sbc driver loads and plays for a while, but eventually the sound chip died again, with the message "play interrupt timeout, channel dead" whenever I try to open it. Some searches indicate that the DMA buffer sizes involved with the ES1888 might be anybody's guess, if that's helpful. I plan to wipe out the FreeBSD installation and install Linux again within a few days, so I'd like to get started finding how to get the sound chip working. ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email sponsored by: Free pre-built ASP.NET sites including Data Reports, E-commerce, Portals, and Forums are available now.
