Tapio Laxström, the developer of the module, found the problem. The hardware which I have is of a newer generation than the driver knows about - the PRODUCT_ID's didn't match. I changed the product id to reflect the device in the emi26 driver and now it works.
Thanks,
Gideon

Is the device listed in /proc/asound/cards?
Is it possible to play sounds (e.g. "aplay something.wav")?
Please show the contents of /proc/asound/card0/stream0 and the output of "lsusb -v".
