why don't you try chmod 777 (world read/write/execute) on al devices alsa
needs?

that means that everybody can use those devices...

I modified the 'snddevices' script to do so (setting all /dev/[alsa devices] 777 and also creating them as 'luca' group - my normal user account). Unfortunately, to use my sound card I need the ACPI support and sometimes (as this evening, I can't figure out the random reasons) with the ACPI my kernel 2.4.21 doesn't start. So I'll report my results as soon as possible.
I tried to set 777 all the ALSA devices and also the owner/group to 'luca', but nothing changed. Everytime I start XMMS from a root login, I can use the sound device (in ALSA mode or OSS emulation mode), while if I try as normal user 'luca' XMMS freezes.

Other possibile solutions?

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca
