I've had this exact problem as well, running a RedHat 8.0 system on my laptop. After weeks of trying to figure out what was wrong, I finally pinned the problem on my PCMCIA ethernet card of all things. When I booted the system without it inserted, let all the services start (including alsasound), and then inserted the card afterwards, the problems went away and I got crystal clear sound out of my quattro.

Although I'm not sure exactly what the precice culprit is, I'd imagine it's somthing to do with PCI or interrupts interfering with the USB system. Any experts care to comment?

Hello,
the inputs from my quattro are noisy and distorted. Sometimes the levels are very low, and sometimes they are overdriven. They always have some kind of digitizing-sounding noise. I have tried several versions of hotplug and alsa including cvs, with the quattro .asoundrc from Patrick Shirkey. I can't work out why sometimes when I boot up, the levels are so low, and other times way too high. I have tried cycling the power to thequattro between boots, plugging in usb only when booted, and various input sources. Even the "direct monitor" switch on the quattro box gives this gated digital-sounding noise. It doesn't have the noise when I try windows, so I guess it's not the hardware (but then it always crashes after about 5 minutes on windows!).
I noticed someone earlier on the dev list had some similar problem, but no clear solution. Does anyone have the quattro working cleanly? How?

thanks
tim
