Now, with the the latest rc8 drivers, libs etc., S/PDIF out works for me. I can record the card's output into my minidic recorder (Redhat 8.0 with kernel 2.4.20-24.8).
The relevant settings in envy24control are:
Patchbay/Router: S/PDIF Out (L) maps to H/W in 1 S/PDIF Out (R) maps to H/W in 2
Hardware Settings: Master Clock 44100 (CD playback) Emphasis: Not indicated
