Having very little success with getting decent audio out of the Alsa drivers for the VIA82xx chipset and was getting thoroughly depressed - then for a change I logged in using KDE instead of Gnome, still had crappy crackley PCM audio using xmms. I decided to see if altering the KDE Arts Sound Server settings would make any difference what-so-ever to the audio...

Set to ALSA as the default driver.
Set 48000 for the Sample rate
and
Set to 16bit by default for the Sample whateveritis  :)
also set it to full duplex operation.

Guess what !?!?

PE R F E C T     P C M    A U D I O ! ! !

Shame I cannot recreate those settings under Gnome as this I believe uses the seemingly harder to alter its defaults EsounD drivers to pass audio through to the ALSA drivers ??

Any Ideas on what might be the next step to get good clean pcm audio under gnome/esd ??

Finally, its not my audio card or ALSA  !!! Something is definately wrong with Gnome/EsD  --

Hope this is of interest..
